Have You Ever Read Babushka Baba Yaga?

Mrs. Buck's update for January 23rd 2007

Our morning began with a new spelling chapter. Our Word of the Day was: “one.” After exploring our new spelling words, we met in our literacy groups. Our reading skill this week is theme. We discussed how the theme of Charlotte’s Web is friendship. Our story in our reader this week is Ananse’s Feast: An Ashanti Tale. This story is a folktale. We talked about the features of a folktale, examined vocabulary, and took a picture walk through the story. To further understand folktales, we listened to a reading of Babushka Baba Yaga by Patricia Polacco. It’s a great Russian folktale about not judging people based on their appearance. In math class, we began dividing by 5’s. These seemed to be easier for us to grasp than dividing by 3’s and 4’s. The Ten Commandments is our new topic for religion. We read about how Moses received the Commandments from God on Mount Sinai. We will be learning how to follow the Ten Commandments in our own lives. Our social studies projects about Washington, D.C. are finished. You should take a peek at our mini murals hanging in the hallway of some of the famous sites in our nation’s capital. Be sure to ask us about the plan that Sophie and the BFG have in mind.
