Happy Catholic Schools Week!
Mrs. Buck's update for January 29th 2007
The first day of Catholic Schools Week went well. We started a new chapter in spelling. Our Word Wall Wizard Word of the Day was: “prettiest.” We talked about how you need to change the “y” to an “i” and then add the ending. Many other words also follow this rule, like “study” and “crazy.” After working in our literacy groups, we took a peek at our new story in our reader called Sam and the Lucky Money. It is all about the Chinese New Year. We will be talking about the Chinese New Year throughout the week and exploring different aspects of the Chinese culture. Did you know that the second day of the Chinese New Year is a day to honor dogs? It is believed that dogs bring good luck. In math, we worked extensively with word problems. Being math detectives and looking for clue words helped us decide what operation we needed to use. Sophie finally met the Queen in The BFG. Will she believe Sophie’s story? Social studies had us thinking about government and rules. In science, we began working with our volcanoes. We can’t wait for them to erupt! At the end of the day, we finished working out the problems from the book Math Curse. Now, we will read some of Science Verse!
