Writing From a Character’s Point of View is Exciting!
Mrs. Buck's update for April 16th 2008
We began our day with vocabulary review and spelling activities. After reviewing our homework, we took our science test on the solar system. It was fun to fill out surveys about our SSR journals. Mrs. Buck will use the information on the surveys for next year. Next, we met in our literacy groups at Centers, Class Book and with Mrs. Buck. A book about Vincent Van Gogh told us much about his life and artwork. After recess, we took our math test on long division. In religion, we read about the Pentecost. We tried to imagine what the Apostles must have felt when the Holy Spirit came upon them. To finish our work with The Tale of Despereaux, we are writing story retellings from the perspective of one of the characters. It is interesting to take on the role of a character and think like they would. Before lunch, we visited the History of Pennsylvania Museum that the fourth grade set up. They did a fabulous job on their projects and knew many facts about the historical places they visited. After lunch, we copied our homework and read our SSR books. We began reading I’m In Charge of Celebrations. This is a long poem about noticing and appreciating the beauty in nature. What a perfect time of the year to read this! It also ties into our theme of art because many artists find inspiration in nature. In social studies, we began learning about landforms and geography. It was neat to compare the Appalachian Mountains with the Rocky Mountains. Do you know the two longest rivers in the U.S.? Our day ended with a computer class with Mr. D. where we mapped out the Pope’s trip to the U.S.
