Happy Earth Day!
Mrs. Buck's update for April 22nd 2008
Today began with vocabulary review and also spelling activities. We checked over our homework and then met at the carpet to discuss the new cycle of Centers Activities. Can you believe we are on our last cycle already? Wow! This year has really flown by! We are very excited about creating new words at Writing River, designing combination sentence frames at Grammar Gully, solving issues about the environment at Solution Shore, reading about the weather in the newspaper at News Nook, writing friendly letters at Letter Lookout, and reading/writing poetry at Poetry Point. Working in our literacy groups is one of our favorite things to do. After we worked in our small groups, we had recess. In reading, we began reading Alejandro’s Gift. It is a great story to be reading during our weekly theme of Earth Day and the Environment. In math, we reviewed the concepts of solid figure faces, edges, and corners (vertices). We also began learning about lines, line segments, points, rays, intersecting lines, and parallel lines. Drawing these in our copybooks in a variety of colors helped us recognize their key features. In religion, we discussed prayer. We talked about the four different types of prayer: Petition, Praise, Forgiveness, and Thanksgiving. Our prayer cubes will be a great study guide to remember this information. This week we will also explore different prayer experiences, such as meditation and choral prayer. Gym class with Mr. Bruno was wonderful! It was such a nice day! After lunch, we read our SSR books and copied our homework. We started our Landforms diagrams in social studies. A water ice birthday treat from Julia was fun to enjoy outside! At the end of the day, we did our Pre-Lab for tomorrow’s science lab. It is exciting to start a new topic: The Sun and Our Skin
