Do You Know How to Use Dominoes?

Mrs. Buck's update for January 25th 2010

We had a fantastic day today!  Our Question of the Day today was:  Do you know someone who builds houses?  (Four of us do; 12 of us do not.)  After our morning meeting, we worked with dominoes in math.  Dominoes can show us different ways to make the same number.  Miss Sharon also told us how Dominoes is a game you can play by matching like numbers.  Recess and snack came next.  We enjoyed reading about dams and how engineers build them.  In language arts, we were introduced to a new word family:  the “ip” family.  It is our first word family with the vowel “i” in it.  Next, we practiced our handwriting in our handwriting books.  We are becoming much more accustomed to using lowercase letters when we write.  Our new weekly poem, Eletelephony, is very funny!  We had fun reading it and finding Star Words.  After lunch and recess, we had a read-aloud and Quiet Time.  Then, we finished painting our birdhouses.  Our journal topic today was:  What I like most about my house is… At the end of the day, we worked in small groups for Activity Time.  One group played dominoes using ones with letters and pictures.  Another group reviewed the “ad” word family by completing a cut and paste sheet along with a word search.  The third group used magnetic letter boards to spell out word families.  The last group had to use a letter chart to illustrate corresponding pictures that begin with certain letter sounds.
