Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Mrs. Buck's update for March 2nd 2010

We had a magnificent day today!  Our Question of the Day Today was:  Which of these Dr. Seuss books is your favorite: Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, or Bears on Wheels?  (Twelve of us chose Green Eggs and Ham; three of us chose The Cat in the Hat; One of us chose Bears on Wheels.)  After our morning meeting, we worked at new Math Centers.  One group had to roll the die and make trains of Unifex cubes.  Another group had to show teen number amounts of 10 + ? using counters.  The third group played Shisima, which a form of Tic Tac Toe from Kenya.  Recess and snack followed.  In language arts, we read two Dr. Seuss books.  Then, we worked with the “op” word family.  Our new unit in Skills for Growing is about skills and talents.  We brainstormed different ideas of skills and talents we have.  Work in our phonics book with the “op” family and the short “o”sound followed.  After practicing our weekly poem, we had recess and then lunch.  The Cat in the Hat  was our read-aloud before Quiet Time.  Music with Miss Elena had us practicing our Africa songs.  Our journal topic today was:  I like Dr. Seuss books because…  In the afternoon, we had Activity Time.  One group worked on weaving our placemats for the Africa Show luncheon.  Another group designed their signs for the Africa show.  The third group worked on an “ig” family cut and paste.  The last group played a Memory Match game using numbers, shapes, number words, and shape words.
